Big Brothers founded in America.

1905

Big Sisters founded in America.

1977

The two organisations merge to form Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

1998

Big Brothers Big Sisters International Established

2000

September - Big Brothers Big Sisters South Africa becomes recognised as "Programme in Formation" affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters International. BBBSSA is the first African Big Brothers Big Sisters programme & 31st country world-wide to host the programme.

2001

July - 20 of South Africa's first BBBSA matches established. Schools Programme established in Maitland. BBBSSA establishes a Partnership with the University of Stellenbosch Department of Social Work.

August - Establish 1st matches on Children's Homes Programme at Marsh Memorial Home in Rondebosch. Matches established with NICRO Journey Diversion Programme.

2002

May - BBBSSA awarded full affiliate status by Big Brothers Big Sisters International.

July - Chosen to be THE project to represent the Western Cape at Nelson Mandela's 84th Birthday celebration. BBBSSA Cape Town's 1st matches celebrate their 1 year commitment

October - The 1st official 14 mentorship matches mark the start of the Schools Mentorship Programme in Gauteng.

2003

January - BBBSSA Gauteng seals a partnership with Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) Social Work Department to recruit 1st year student volunteers on the programme for their internship. BBBSSA Cape Town establishes new matches in Khayelitsha as part of its Diversion Programme.

February - BBBSSA Gauteng's first matches for both the Diversion and Children's Home Programmes established.

August - Dead Cat Bounce joins BBBSSA and Boys Town to raise funds for providing these Littles with Bigs. BBBSSA Cape Town's 300th match takes place at James House in Hout Bay.

December - BBBSSA joins CRED and other youth development agencies at the V&A Waterfront in a drumming for justice session. BBBSSA visited by KFM 94.5 radio station.

2004

Click for a bigger pictureJanuary - BBBSSA appears on the SABC-2 Spirit Sundae Show. Witwatersrand College of Education introduces 3rd year teaching students to BBBSSA for their service learning internship.

May - BBBSSA Cape Town celebrates its 700th match at Dingle House, Boys Town, Cape Town.

July - BBBSSA CEO attends "The Power of One" conference at BBBS of America's 100th aniversary.

September - BBBSSA Cape Town celebrates its successful matches for the year at a joint graduation and Fun Day event held at Observatory Junior School.

December - BBBSSA Gauteng celebrates its 1st Awards Day.

2005

April - BBBSSA Gauteng's 200th match takes place at Abraham Kriel Home.

August - BBBSSA KwaZulu Natal is launched in Chatsworth.

October - BBBSSA Gauteng's 300th match is celebrated at Nkosi's Haven. BBBSSA CEO attends the BBBSI International Leadership Conference in Dublin.



2006

February - The Umsombvu Youth Fund, National Youth Commission and BBBSSA Partnership Launch takes place in Mamalodi, being endorsed by South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

March - BBBSSA Gauteng commemorates the launch of the BBBSA Pretoria Programme with its 1st match. BBBSSA Gauteng celebrates its 400th match. BBBSSA features on "Kid's News Room" on SABC.

May - BBBSSA Cape Town have matched over 1150 children.

July - BBBSSA CEO attends Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Convention focusing on themes of sustainability and fund development.

August - BBBSSA Pietermaritzburg is launched in KwaZulu Natal. BBBSSA Western Cape holds its 1st Annual Service Provider's Meeting.

September - BBBSSA Gauteng celebrates its 500th Match. BBBSSA Gauteng receives an award from Harambe in honour of their participation in employee volunteerism.

October - BBBSSA Gauteng records its longest match of 4-years in the Community Programme.

November - BBBSSA Gauteng hosts the 1st National BBBSSA event in celebration of mentorship. BBBSSA Western Cape is featured on "Destination SA" on SABC 2. BBBSI CEO, Kitty Balsley, visits BBBSSA.

December - BBBSSA forms a partnership with Pretoria University in recruiting 1st and 2nd year students as part of their internship.
