Mike and Jeandré

In the beginning of 2006, I joined the Big Brother programme. I had never done something like this before and I therefore really did not know what to expect.

I was quickly matched with a boy from Bramley Children's Home in Groenkloof, Pretoria. His name was Marius and he was 10 years old.

I really enjoyed visiting Marius and we quickly formed a friendship. In April, Marius was placed back in the care of his parents. I was asked if I would like to change my match from a Children's Home match to a Community match. I did this without hesitation and continued to see Marius on weekends at his parent's house.

After several visits, circumstances arose that made things quite complicated and it was decided by BBBSSA and myself to put the match on hold until the circumstances could be sorted out.

During this time I could not seem to stay away from the Children's Home and I became involved at Bramley Children's Home by assisting them when they needed someone to relieve the house parent.

One evening, while relieving the house parent, I met a twelve year old boy named Jeandré. Jeandré and I chatted that evening and something seemed to click between us. We seemed to have an instant bond.

I started visiting Jeandré more often and, everyday that we saw each other, the bond between us got stronger and stronger.

At this point I approached BBBSSA and requested to have my relationship with Jeandré formalised by matching us in the Big Brother programme. BBBSSA agreed to this and my match with Marius was closed - I became Jeandré's Big Brother.

The relationship that I formed with Jeandré was one that I was never expecting to form when I joined the Big Brother programme. I now realise that the programme is not only about helping those in need but it also gives so much back to the Big. I have learnt so much in the last year and have realised what life is really about.

Not only have Jeandré and I become best friends, but he has really become my little brother. Spending time with Jeandré is usually the best part of my week.

Thank you to BBBSSA for giving me the opportunity to form an AWESOME friendship with an AWESOME Little! This has been a life changing experience that I will remember forever.
