Shanta and Michelle

When BBBSSA contacted me and told me that they had found me a match, I was ecstatic. I made an appointment to meet with my little on the 26th of May. When I got to ABH, I waited in the reception area to meet my Little, Michelle. In one corner of the room sat this beautiful young girl chewing her fingernails. I thought to myself, "Ag shame, I wonder why she's here". She looked so nervous. Little did I realise that she was going to be my Little sister. After Michelle and I were introduced to each other, we decided to find a quiet spot and get acquainted. Michelle is a very shy child.

On the second visit, my Little was very excited to chat with me. She voluntarily shared memories of her childhood with me. This made me feel very special. After every visit with Michelle, when I get home, I cannot stop talking about her. Whenever I see her she’s always smiling from ear to ear.

Michelle finds it difficult to make friends because of her shyness. She did not have any friends at school. She did tell me about a girl at school that always smiled at her during examinations. I told Michelle to approach the girl at the end of the day and ask her how she felt about the exam paper. Also tell her what she thought of the papers.

On the next visit, Michelle waited anxiously for me. As soon as she saw me, she gave me a big hug as usual and said, "You know what? I spoke to that girl and now she's my friend. We speak to each other every day".

I hugged her and said, "Well done! Now that's how you make friends. All you need to do is strike a conversation, be it the weather or whatever you like to talk about".

Michelle is still very shy - I guess it will take some time. She's been my little sister for only two months. I'm sure, in time, we will learn more from each other. All these kids need is love and guidance. I wish more people would train and join the BBBSSA programme. One hour per week of your time can give a child a lifetime of happiness.
