Cape Town - Diversion 2006Click for a bigger picture

We had planned to take the Diversion Programme matches to Robben Island on 22 July 2006. Robben Island had confirmed a group concession for our outing planned on this day but, unfortunately, the weather was not in our favour and all the trips for that day were cancelled.

Everyone was disappointed, but we took a vote and decided to visit the NuMetro cinemas at the Waterfront. We watched the movie "Take the Lead", which was about children growing up in low socio-economic environments, rising above their circumstances through dance and having positive role models to motivate them. For some of the children, it was their first time at a cinema, so they were very excited about the whole experience.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed lunch and snacks which were prepared beforehand. It was a lot of hard work but, at the end of the day, we felt rewarded in that BBBSSA is part of making a difference in the lives of these children.

The BBBSSA Western Cape team decided that it would be a good idea to take the Bigs and Littles of out Children's Homes Programme to the GrandWest Casino Ice Rink. It was a cold & rainy day which added to the icy atmosphere of the skating rink. We enjoyed a lovely meal from KFC, which warmed us up. Wimpy kindly donated ice cream cones for the Bigs and Littles, which they were treated to after the skating session.

Cape Town - Schools 2006Click for a bigger picture

BBBSSA had its Annual Schools Outing on the 2nd September 2006. The event took place at the Ice Station ice rink at Grandwest Casino. Out of the 150 matches invited to the outing, 100 matches from Gugulethu, Stellenbsoch, Paarl, Kuilsriver, Hanover Park, Bonteheuwel, Maitland and Elsies River attended.

With the support of Deloitte, volunteers (Darius, Zukiswa, Tenji, Tanya, Aadila and Renee) we were able to provide the BIGs and their Littles with the opportunity to skate on the ice rink together and lunch at KFC.

Teachers at the schools had mentioned to BBBSSA that the kids had a lovely time and enjoyed themselves immensely. It was the first time many of them were given the opportunity to ice skate.

We'd especially like to thank the Deloitte Foundation for assisting us with part sponsorship of this event, and the dedication of their staff in assisting us on the day.
