BBBSSA KwaZulu Natal's first annual event. The Fun Day on 7 October 2006 proved an enormous success. Durban and Pietermaritzburg hosted a combined event for all the Bigs and Littles, at Beachwood Mangroves.
Beachwood Mangroves is a nature reserve that leads onto the beach via a 200-meter boardwalk. This was the perfect venue, as it encouraged excitement in the Littles right from the start. The Littles were led by the Bigs across the boardwalk and could not contain their joy when they caught a glimpse of the ocean.
T-shirts were printed for all Bigs and Littles. Meals included a boerewors braai, pancakes, snacks and cooldrink for all to enjoy. The children were entertainmened by a jumping castle, volleyball, clowns, face painting, and a drumming session led by Richard Ellis, which concluded the day. Everyone departed feeling jovial and free spirited.
The bonding that occurred was amazing. This was a great opportunity for Bigs to be whimsical and bond with the Littles in a light hearted and fun way. Mentors were also able to share their feelings and achievements with each other. The standard has been set for other such successes to follow.
BBBSSA KwaZulu Natal thanks all our sponsors for their generous contributions. Beachwood Mangroves allowed us use of the beautiful venue. ABI sponsored Coke, and Anand's Bakery fresh rolls. Illovo added sweetness to the event. Thanks to Bluff Meats for your contribution to the Braai, and to Ronald Rampersad for your contribution of the Jumping Castle. Thank you, Annelise Warrington and Vernon Munien, for your assistance with the photographs.
